Car Key and Key Fob Programming Guide by Make

Find how your vehicle's keys and remotes are programmed, by make and model year, and when it is faster and safer to call a mobile automotive locksmith. Dealerkeys serves East Tennessee.

Pick your vehicle make

Each guide shows how that make's keys and remotes are programmed by model year, whether a self-programming method exists, and when to call a locksmith.

How car key programming works

Transponder keys

Most vehicles built since the late 1990s have an immobilizer. The key carries a chip, and the car will not start unless it recognizes that chip. A new key has to be cut to fit the lock and then programmed to the car.

Remotes and key fobs

The remote buttons that lock and unlock the doors are paired separately. On some older vehicles the pairing can be done with an on-board sequence. On newer ones it takes a diagnostic tool.

Push-to-start smart keys

Smart keys let the car sense the fob in the cabin. They almost always need a diagnostic programming tool and, on many vehicles, a security code, and the existing keys may all need to be present.

All keys lost

With no working key, a locksmith opens the vehicle if needed, makes a key to fit the lock, and programs it using the car's diagnostic port. We do this at your vehicle across East Tennessee, and we quote the price before work starts.

This guide is general information. Procedures vary by model, trim and equipment, and a wrong attempt can leave a vehicle unable to accept new keys. Call or text with the year, make and model, and we will tell you what yours needs.

Key programming questions

Can I program a car key fob myself?

On some older vehicles, yes: certain remotes can be programmed with an on-board ignition and door-lock sequence. Most newer vehicles, and any chip key the car must recognize, need a diagnostic programming tool. Pick your make below to see how yours works.

What is the difference between a transponder key and a key fob?

A transponder key has a chip the car reads before it will start. A key fob or remote locks and unlocks the doors. Many keys combine both, and push-to-start smart keys do the job without turning in an ignition.

Why can a locksmith make a key when a dealer says it has to be ordered?

A mobile locksmith carries the key blanks and programming equipment, so the key is cut and programmed at your vehicle. We quote the price first and need ID and proof of ownership before making a key.
