Three groups, five generations.
Every VAG immobilizer generation falls into one of three practical groups. Not sure which yours is? Call — we can usually tell from the year and model.
IMMO 1 & 2 — Older
Roughly 1995–2004. Simpler, PIN-based systems tied to the instrument cluster. VW Golf 3/4, Passat B4/B5, early Polo, Audi A3 (8L), early A4 (B5/B6).

IMMO 4 — Most Common
Roughly 2005–2019. The generation we see most often. VW Golf 5/6, Jetta A5/A6, Passat B6/B7, CC, Tiguan (1st gen), Beetle (2011+), Audi A3 (8P/8V), TT (8J).

Roughly 2015 onward. The most encrypted VAG systems to date, on MQB-platform models. Higher complexity, often more lead time.
