Polk County is the southeastern corner of our service area, running along US-64 and US-411 into the Cherokee National Forest and the Ocoee River gorge. Benton is the county seat, with Ducktown and Copperhill in the Copper Basin near the Georgia and North Carolina lines.
The Ocoee, site of the 1996 Olympic whitewater events, draws rafters and campers, and the Copper Basin towns sit right on the state line, so many drivers here are visitors a long way from home when a key goes missing.
The Olympic whitewater course on the Ocoee River, along US-64 in the gorge, is the easiest landmark to name, and the Polk County Courthouse is the one to name in Benton. The Ocoee Whitewater Center, built for the 1996 Olympic whitewater events, is remembered fondly by people across Polk County. A fire destroyed the building on April 26, 2022, but the river course is still there.
