Dayton is the seat of Rhea County and home to Bryan College, on Chickamauga Lake along US-27. Its courthouse hosted the 1925 Scopes Trial, which still draws visitors to downtown.
The Rhea County Courthouse, with the Scopes Trial museum in its basement, is the best-known landmark downtown and an easy one to name. The state historical marker on the lawn describes the 1925 trial, so it makes a handy reference point if you are parked on the square.
